Overview

The study tour to Brazil took place between March 28 and April 10, 2009 and was comprised  of two Bocconi University professors, four researchers and 20 students. The group went to Brazil with the primary purpose of analyzing the art systems of the two metropolitan centres of the country, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Artists’ studios, galleries, museums, and other institutions were visited in order to gain an overview of the networks and mechanisms that are operating in each of the cities and their respective influence on forming imaginaries. More specifically, various actors involved in the production, distribution and diffusion of art (artists, gatekeepers and other players) were interviewed, resulting in the collection of a plethora of data (reports, photographs, recordings). The study also focused on Brazilian street art and other relevant cultural areas.

This platform was created in order to organize and share the data that was collected during the study tour (and the analysis that followed) for the benefit of all audiences interested in obtaining an overview of the cultural landscape of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The initiative strives to involve institutions and persons related to Brazilian heritage in order initiate a dialogue about the topics that were raised during the research. Furthermore we hope to open the discussion to individuals by inviting them to leave their comments in various sections of the platform.
The site is divided into the following sections: Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and analysis. The Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro sections are presented as itineraries of the journey. To read a full report and explore photos and videos of each visit, simply click on the name of the contact. Enjoy!
