Michel Groisman // Porta das Mãos

July 10, 2011
Thursday July 14th, 8pm
@ Le Case D’Arte
via Circo 1

In the work Porta das Mãos the body turns into an eloquent puzzle. The Brazilian artist Michel Groisman works with his hands to create harmonious images that flow into eachother, transforming and evolving over time. A delicate dance that gradually unfolds to reveal a multitude of movements within one’s own hands.

Michel Groisman’s work integrates visual art with corporal games, devising equipment that is used with the body in various performances, group games and for interacting with the public. The interdisciplinary nature of his work has earned him art research scholarships from several institutions, including Rioarte (2004), Vitae (2002) and Uniarte da Faperj (2000). He was awarded the 8o Salão da Bahia (2001), with the prize “O Artista Pesquisador” MAC Niteroi (2001), and nominated for the Rolex Award – Mentor and protégé artist Initiative (2007). His work has been shown in various museums and performing arts festivals such as: Tempo exhibition, MoMA (New York); exposure Do not Call It Performance, El Museo Del Barrio (New York); II Bienal of Lima (Peru); Braaaasil Festival, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid); festival de La Batiê, (Geneva); Festival In Transit the Berlin Lab (Germany); Encontros Acarte in Lisbon; 29a Bienal de São Paulo (Brazil); and Ver – Live art encounter at the eco-village Terra Una (Brazil), among others. Michel started to devise corporal equipment while he attended Music School, where he graduated as music teacher. It was at this time that he discovered that he could invent new instruments, and that those instruments did not need to be musical, they could be instruments or equipment, that would serve for a self investigation and interaction with others.

>> This performance will be preceded by a series of workshops held by the artist in Milan on July 11th, 12th and 13th. Those interested in participating in the workshops can contact or call 3286260050.

>> The performance is open to all. A free contribution will be suggested by the organizers.

Special thanks to Le Case D’Arte for hosting this event.
