Museu da Imagem e do Som

The Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS) – São Paulo, is a state museum under the State Secretariat of Culture, and was created in 1970 in order to be a modern  and live museum and to have at the mass communication its main source, supported by image and sound resources. The collection hosts more than 200,000 items among films, music albums, photographs, posters, oral history and image and sound equipments. Under new direction since August 2008, the MIS reopened with full, renovated, and up-to-date equipment and calendar of activities compatible with its new concept which is to integrate the emergency of new technological media within hybrid contemporary art forms to the memory already constituted by its collection.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The museum is public and offers exhibitions, cinema and video initiatives, shows and performances, symposia, and at the Lab offers workshops and courses. One of the  institution’s main activities is done through LabMIS, a program that allows the research and creation of artworks through new technologies and media. It is an annual resident program that selects young and creative Brazilian artists to develop a project of their own, and launch it into the market. The idea is to foster contemporary art projects that are innovative and related to new media and digital technologies (digital photography, video and cinema, artistic audio, web art, games and computer graphics, interface design and computing, virtual communities and open source software). There is also an International Residence Program, based on exchanged between institutions, allowing Brazilian artists to pursue their art researches abroad and receiving International artists to develop their project in Brazil.

In exchange, MIS requires that the artists give credit to the museum as a supporter, and make the location of the exhibition of their work known (exhibition and promotion in the MIS center is included in the LabMIS program by default).

Other educational programs organized by the museum include guided tours of the exhibitions, workshops and meetings with artists, art critics and curators.

The Museum is located in an upper class neighborhood, quite still and isolated, but with good services. The objective now and for the future is to be more and more open and at the forefront in digital and new media art practices. The MIS new direction has been also running, for the last eleven years, Paço das Artes, an exhibition space dedicated to national and international contemporary art manifestations in a broader way. Paço das Artes is located at the São Paulo University Campus.
